The Floodplain inundation and drying project was conducted by the University of Queensland, the South Australian Department for Environment and Water, and the MDBA. This project aimed to improve the understanding of water and salt movement in lower River Murray floodplains following inundation. This presentation provided an opportunity for salinity managers, environmental water managers, and river managers to be presented with the outcomes emerging from this research project.
Results were presented from the second phase of research (July 2021 to June 2022) looking at the overall water and salt mass balance, through all pathways (i.e. evaporation, infiltration and groundwater recharge). Conceptualisation of mechanisms underpinning these processes has improved, as well as how the numerical models built in phase one (2020-21) were refined were also presented.
